The CRL Forum: Due Diligence: What Library Directors Should Know When
Investing in Print and Electronic Repositories

Due Diligence I: Putting a Price on Digital Preservation

The one certainty of digital preservation is that its future costs are uncertain. The
CRL Forum will explore the economics of preserving journals and other
electronic scholarly resources, looking at the relative costs and benefits of
centralized repositories versus cooperative and local archiving solutions. The
Forum will draw upon CRL’s history as a shared collection of paper and
microforms, and its recent appraisals of Portico, LOCKSS and other electronic
repositories. Presentations will compare costs of various strategies for ensuring
the persistence of critical digital materials, and look at ways in which to evaluate
the potential benefits of those strategies.

Due Diligence II: Risk Bearing and Persistent Access to Digital Collections

Paul N. Courant, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, Arthur F. Thurnau
Professor, Harold T. Shapiro Collegiate Professor of Public Policy, and Professor
of Economics, University of Michigan
Dr. Courant will discuss ways in which universities use digital technologies to
protect their investments in traditional and electronic collections.
