Building Blocks of a National Print Preservation Network: A Strategic Forum

The Preserving America's Print Resources (PAPR) Conference emphasized the urgency of libraries acting together to strategically preserve the nation’s print heritage materials. This is particularly challenging to libraries confronting exorbitant and rising costs of maintaining electronic resources.

At this year’s annual meeting of the Council of Voting Members, speakers will report on progress on four major collection fronts since the PAPR Conference. Speakers will invite comments and ideas from the Voting Members Council. (For the action agenda, please see the PAPR draft report.)

The forum will focus on:

  • Monographs
Nancy Davenport, Director of Acquisitions, Library of Congress, will speak about the issues that the Library is confronting in developing its archiving strategy for print monographs. She will invite feedback from Center members on these issues.
  • Federal Documents
Judy Russell, Superintendent of Documents with the Government Printing Office, will present a status report and welcome ideas and comments on the GPO’s strategy to optimize archiving of printed and other tangible legacy government publications in its system of depositories.
  • Newspapers
Bernard Reilly, President of the Center for Research Libraries, will discuss how the Center and its partners propose to work in concert to ensure access to and survival of important news content.
  • Journals
Melissa Trevvett, Vice President for Programs and Services, Center for Research Libraries, will present an update on emerging print archiving programs throughout North America.
