Why do we need a prospective print journal archive if we subscribe to Portico?

While Portico is a CRL certified not-for-profit digital preservation service providing a permanent archive of electronic journals, books, and other scholarly content, the community needs to address the preservation of physical and digital content in a variety of ways.  Participation in Portico and other certified archives is one of the ways to address community needs, but development and maintenance of print archives is just as important.

As individual libraries increasingly rely on digital delivery of journals and seek to reduce local costs for holding print, it is important for the research library community as a whole to maintain and provide access to print issues somewhere in the system.  As described in a recent ITHAKA S+R report, What to Withdraw: Print Collections Management in the Wake of Digitization, development and maintenance of several comprehensive print collections is of utmost importance.
