Please see http://ucblib.link/sharing2021 [2] for information about New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information online forum, to be held on select Mondays in early 2021.
Librarians in North America have long-standing relationships with Western European libraries and materials vendors to support research in the humanities and to maintain non-English collections. In today’s research and budgetary environments there are increasing pressures on the traditional humanities, while developments in technology and large-scale initiatives offer new opportunities for libraries, publishers, and content suppliers to collaborate. Despite the importance of addressing these changes, there are few opportunities for librarians and vendors to have meaningful and deep discussions.
The New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information continues conversations begun at the New Directions Symposium [3] held in Frankfurt in 2017. This multi-day forum of panel presentations, a poster session, and interactive breakout sessions on key issues facing Western European collections and public services will encourage both structured and unstructured debate. We will advance our understanding of the challenges and initiate action in three areas: design new models for collaborative collection development and services; explore a growing range of content and format types and what they mean for libraries and researchers, and highlight the evolving role of libraries and librarians in the research process.
Some important dates to keep in mind:
Focusing on Western European collections and their importance to the humanities and social sciences, we invite proposals for papers, posters, and breakout sessions on new opportunities for collaboration among libraries, publishers, and content suppliers. Sharing is all the more necessary today, given the increasing pressures on the role of the traditional humanities in the university.
Overarching themes for the workshop are new models for collaborative collection development and services, and the evolving role of libraries and librarians in the research process.
Topics of particular interest include:
For breakout sessions we encourage proposals by participants interested in leading a discussion on a specific topic or question relevant to the forum.
The deadline for proposals was October 15, 2019.
At the conclusion of the workshop, there will be a call for contributions to an edited ebook for those who wish to include their papers or posters.
Attendees of the New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information Forum will find information about transportation, lodging, sightseeing in and around Fiesole, Italy and other logistics on a guide created by Planning Team member Joanneke Elliott.
CIFNAL (the Collaborative Initiative for French Language Collections) [9] and GNARP (German-North American Resources Partnership) [10] announce that travel stipends will be made available to attend the New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information [15] forum to be held in Fiesole, Italy, May 2020. These stipends aim to increase communication and collaboration between North American and European librarians and information professionals.
Staff members from libraries that are institutional members of CIFNAL [16] or GNARP [17] (GNARP North American members only) and personal members (as of July 1, 2019) of CIFNAL or GNARP are eligible to apply for the stipends. Persons who are members of both CIFNAL and GNARP may receive only one stipend.
Preference for the stipends will be given to candidates who are:
Stipends will range up to $2000 to defray the cost of registration and/or travel. They will be awarded at the following levels:
Applications [18] must be received by December 10, 2019. The stipend will be administered through CRL, and the selection of recipients will be made before January 10, 2020, by designees of the CIFNAL and GNARP Steering Committees and CRL.
Stipend payments will be made after the forum is held. In order to receive the stipend payment, stipend awardees will be required to submit travel receipts and a one-page report documenting their experiences at the forum, and how their attendance at the event contributes to the work of CIFNAL and/or GNARP. Stipend awardees from the United States will also need to complete a W-9 form.
