U.S. Census Data [1]

Tabbed

Landscape

CRL holds the U.S. National Archives microfilm editions of the U.S. Federal population decennial census schedules from 1790 through1930, a "census substitute" for 1890, and the soundex for the 1880 population schedules. The soundex filing system is a phonetic code used to file together similar sounding surnames with variant spellings. This system was first used to create a card index for the 1880 population census. Only households with children aged ten and under were indexed in the 1880 soundex. CRL holdings of these materials are described below; unless otherwise noted, CRL's holdings are complete.

CRL holds over 700 reels of non-population census schedules that were compiled with federal decennial population censuses, but has been unable to find extant schedules for 1890. Schedules for 1900+ were destroyed after the statistical data was extracted. The Center has holdings of U.S. National Archives microfilm sets and microfilm by other archives holding the original schedules.
