India

Curzon, India and empire : the papers of Lord Curzon (1859-1925) from the Oriental and India Office Collections at the British Library, London

The papers of George Nathaniel Curzon, Viceroy of India from 1898 to 1905, document aspects of Curzon's involvement with India, including the creation of the North West Frontier Province in 1901 as well as the partition of Bengal in 1905.

CRL owns Part 1 (29 reels) of this set: "Demi-official correspondence, c.1898-1905." This set documents Curzon's correspondence with the Queen-Empress and King-Emperor; correspondence and telegrams to and from the Secretary of State 1899-1905; and correspondence with various persons in England and India. Content is drawn from Mss Eur F 111/135-136, 142-164, 169-175, 181-183, 199-211, 213, 216, and Mss Eur F 112/412-413.

GUIDE: Publications proscribed by the government of India, a Catalogue of the collections in India Office Library and Records and the Dept. of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books. The set reproduces over 1,600 items banned by the British Government in India prior to 1947. The collections include material in English and the vernacular languages of India. An index is included on the reels.

Statistical abstract relating to British India

CRL owns v.1-55 (1867-1922) of the Statistical Abstract Relating to British India, a key statistical resource for scholars of Indian history. Select volumes (1840-1920) have been digitized by the Digital South Asia Library [42] as page images as well as in Excel formatted spreadsheets.

This collection, drawn from the files of the India Office Political and Secret Department archives in the British Library, consists of detailed secret and confidential reports from Frontier Agents in the tribal borderlands of Pakistan and Afghanistan, from the constitution of the British Indian 'North-West Frontier Province' through 1949.
