A number of CRL staff members will attend this year’s ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco, June 25-30, to report on, and gather input for, CRL programs.

TRAIL will now collect U.S. government technical reports from all years, doing away with the 1975 cutoff it had previously used.  Following a recent vote of the membership, the TRAIL Bylaws were amended to allow for personal memberships.

Over the last several months CRL has undertaken several major upgrades to the facility.  These projects represent the culmination of a multi-year initiative focused on improving the Center’s preservation environment, and increasing energy efficiency.   

The Middle East Materials Project (MEMP) and the South Asia Materials Project (SAMP) contributed funds for the preservation of seventeen newspaper and serial titles published in Afghanistan.

The Middle East Materials Project (MEMP) has microfilmed several Iraqi newspapers published in Baghdad after the 2003 invasion.

CRL has released the findings of its preservation audit, and has certified CLOCKSS as a trustworthy digital repository. The certification applies to the repository’s ability to preserve and manage digital content deposited with CLOCKSS by participating e-journal publishers as of May 2014. 

The Center for Research Libraries recently received funding to support international analysis and planning for archiving and strategic digitization of print journals and newspapers. CRL will use these funds to expand its collecting and analysis of data on archiving and digitization efforts in the two domains, and promote coordinated, strategic action in these areas by libraries and consortia.

In recent years, CRL’s Area Studies Microform Projects supported the preservation of more than 300 newspaper titles collected by the Library of Congress overseas offices, ensuring scholarly access to more than 450,000 pages of news from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.   

CRL’s Print Archives Preservation Registry (PAPR), a registry of print archives and shared print programs and a database of titles and holdings preserved by those programs, now provides comparison reports to aid collection development decisions and planning.

The Digital Distributed Community Archive (the CLOCKSS Archive) has engaged the Center for Research Libraries to undertake an in-depth audit of the CLOCKSS preservation archive.

In September 2012, the Government Printing Office engaged CRL to undertake an audit of FDsys, the GPO’s digital repository for U.S. federal government publications. In December, the GPO terminated its contract with CRL for the audit because of the federal budgetary constraints connected with the “fiscal cliff” and subsequent sequestration.

The Center for Research Libraries has published the findings of its preservation audit, certifying Scholars Portal as a trustworthy digital repository for e-journal content.

The U.S. Government Printing Office has engaged the Center for Research Libraries to undertake an in-depth audit of FDsys, the GPO’s federal digital repository. The audit will begin in January 2013 and be concluded by September.

In a recent message to CRL library directors, Bernie Reilly reported that CRL has begun to explore providing “end-to end” coverage of news content to researchers at CRL libraries. The recent CRL offers of several key news databases from Readex are a step in that direction: they provide favorable terms for access to a range of historic and current news content.

CRL and the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology have entered into a strategic partnership to preserve and develop historical research collections in the fields of science, technology and engineering.

A 2011 CRL report produced for the Library of Congress gives an overview of news workflow and production systems and insights on the new “lifecycle” of news content.
