SALALM 49
Ann Arbor, MI

Attending: Ann Barnhart, Paul Bary, Adan Benavides, David Block, Paula Covington, Russ Davidson, Carlos Delgado, Pamela Graham, Tony Harvell, Dan Hazen, Peter Johnson, Karen Lindvall-Larson, Eudora Loh, Paul Losch, Kathy Marsicek, Cesar Rodríquez, Peter Stern, Lourdes Vázquez, Gayle Williams, and Mary Jo Zeter.

The minutes for the June 6, 2004 LARRP meeting were circulated, amended, and accepted.

SVJ circulated an amended fee proposal. The revised annual fee will be $900. Per discussions at the 6/6/04 meeting, new members will have the annual fee waived for three years. Latin American members will pay $100 annually. The fee will be reviewed each year at SALALM.

David Block and Carlos Delgado reported on the Latin American Open Archives Project. DB noted that they will be looking for new Latin American participants. Carlos reported on his trip to FLACSO-Chile. He recommended that the project consider having an individual at FLACSO-Chile or CIRMA train new participants. This will be easier than sending someone from North America .

Eudora Loh reported that FLACSO-Chile staff, Kent Northsworthy, CD and she will give a panel at LASA this coming October.

The membership then moved on to consider new projects. SVJ referred to a handout of projects that he had collected over the past few months. He reported that the Communications and Outreach Working Group will send out an electronic survey to members and LASA in the near future to gather more ideas.

Ann Barnhart asked that LARRP consider adding Portuguese and Spanish titles to LAPTOC. Fernando Costa-Rodríguez noted there was a Spanish database that has 20-30 Iberian journals that might be considered. Peter Johnson noted that including these journals would reflect current scholarly publishing as there is growing interest in Latin America in Spain .

Paul Losch said that a project applying GIS software will be looked on favorably by scholars at the University of Florida , as there is considerable work being done there on land issues.

Dan Hazen pointed out that to make the October 2004 TICFIA deadline, we must move forward very quickly with a decision on a proposal, particularly if we plan to submit the proposal with other GRN projects.

SVJ reported that there was tentative interest at the April GRN meeting in a project to scan Latin American photographic collections.

DB recommended a project to archive official statistical information now published on the Internet in Latin America . There was interest in this as a GRN project, rather than just for LARRP. SVJ will pursue this further.
