Search Tips

  • Keyword searches retrieve single or multiple words from all title, author, publisher and note fields
  • Adjacent words are treated as a phrase; enter terms in exact order without quotation marks
  • Searches are not case sensitive

Boolean Operators:

Use Boolean terms AND, OR, AND NOT to search or exclude multiple words and to override adjacency default

Proximity Operators:

Use Proximity terms NEAR or WITHIN to find words within a specified number of words or within each other
NEAR finds words within 10 words of each other, e.g. Map near Brazil
WITHIN allows you to specify the number of words, e.g. Map within 3 Brazil
To use Boolean or Proximity operators as search terms, enclose them in quotation marks, e.g. "Near" East.

Wildcards:

*   Use a single asterisk to truncate up to 5 characters from the end of a word (e.g. organiz* for organization and organizing)
**   Use a double asterisk to truncate an unlimited number of characters from the end of a word
?   Used a question mark to fill in for a single character within a word (wom?n for women and woman)

Limiting:

Advanced keyword searching allows you to limit your search by a single or multiple categories

Sorting:

The default sort is an alphabetized list of titles
A pre-search sort will organize the results by date of publication or by relevancy
