Current Projects Underway
19th Century Venezuelan Newspapers
This collection includes forty-one newspapers and serials
published in Caracas, Venezuela between 1820 and 1860. Thirty-one
of the titles are not listed in OCLC or RLIN.
Aquí (La Paz, Bolivia)
LAMP is filming this independent newspaper published during
the turbulent period of the 1980s in Bolivia.
Benson Latin American collection of Mexican serials on
microfilm
The majority of this collection is not represented in OCLC,
as either print masters and/or service copies were not made
at the time of filming. Benson has recently been duplicating
this material. LAMP support will complete the duplication
of the remaining 62 Mexican titles by creating a 2nd and
3rd generation copies for Benson and a positive copy for
LAMP.
CESPI documents on Brazilian/Latin American
Children
The Center for Research on Childhood (CESPI)
at the Universidade Santa Úrsula (Rio de Janeiro)
possesses an archival collection about Brazilian children
and youth, including subjects such as the history of child
welfare, legislation on children, and guides to research
on children throughout Latin America. LAMP has preserved
the materials of Dr. Moncorvo Filho, whose work was dedicated
primarily to the social aspects of the effects of poverty
on Brazilian children and youth.
Status: Filming complete. Secondary funding
to digitize the collection has been committed.
See Completed Projects.
Status: LAMP has acquired various bibliographies
to serve as a reel guide. Exploring full cataloging options.
The Library of Congress and LAMP have long
been collaborating on filming important ministerial records
from Latin America.
Paraguayan Newspapers
LAMP will microfilm Paraguayan newspapers
from Asunción in the 1890s. These newspapers are
from the collection of the University of Connecticut.
La Protesta
LAMP intends to film this Argentine radical periodical,
held in part by UCLA. IDC Publishers has filmed a significant run of
this title (1903-1941) in its Latin
American Anarchist and Labour Periodicals (c. 1880-1940)
collection, though there are some gaps in the collection.
LAMP will compare the IDC inventory with other collections
to ascertain whether LAMP is able to fill in the gaps.
Nascimento was the 1st Afro-Brazilian senator
in Brazil and an activist for Afro-Brazilian rights since
the early 1930s in Brazil. His archive chronicles the evolution
of 20th century Afro-Brazilian consciousness. It includes
personal papers, news clippings, manuscripts, correspondence,
theses and dissertations, mimeographed materials from various
African world events, and other ephemera (including drama
works by such groups as the Convicts’ Theater founded
by Nascimento). LAMP is contributing funds to organize and
preserve this archive.
See reel guide.
El Universal de Cartagena
LAMP is exploring the preservation of this
title from Cartagena, Colombia.
Variedades
This illustrated weekly was the foremost chronicle
of the cultural, political, and social development for Peru
for the first third of the 20th century. Edited by
Clementa Palma, the magazine is notable for its satirical
character, literary and social content, and political commentary.
Palma conceived of the magazine as a critical voice in Peruvian
affairs, independent of political postures and partisan
polemics. Humor was the vehicle used to address political
controversies. LAMP is filming a virtually complete
collection of this serial acquired by UCLA, from 1908-1932.
Developing Proposals
Latin American Labor Movement newspapers
UCLA has digitized six early 19th century labor newspapers.
LAMP is keeping track of the process and costs for future
consideration, and may consider microfilming select titles.
Tabled Projects
Afro-Cuban newspapers
LAMP is investigating sources for Afro-Cuban
serial titles, in cooperation with the Biblioteca Nacional
Jose Martí, Cuba.
Cuban Pamphlets at the National Library
The National Library of Cuba has more than 3,000 pamphlets
from the 19th century they wish to film and digitize.
LAMP will examine a sampling of holdings to determine whether
these are already being filmed by institutions in the U.S.
(Harvard, NYPL).
Status: No forward motion. Table for now.
Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Pensamiento
A preliminary proposal to film the "Coleccion de Folklore
de la Encuesta Docente" at the Instituto Nacional de
Antropologia y Pensamiento. The archive contains 3,222 dossiers
containing songs, tales, testimonies, proverbs, and superstitions
from different parts of the country, collected in 1921 by
interviewees of elder citizens. A well-organized published
index exists for the collection.
Status: The Instituto decided not to pursue
at this time. Revisit in future? 6/2003.
