The Area Studies Council (ASC) was formed
in 1992 to serve as an advisory panel to the Planning Committee
of the Center for Research Libraries.
The Council has two main functions. First, it fosters communication
and the exchange of information among the different Area Studies
projects, between the projects and the governance structure
of CRL, and between the projects and outside organizations.
Second, the Council serves as an advisory body to CRL in areas
where their subject expertise is appropriate and their experience
in cooperative ventures is pertinent. This might include questions
as to how CRL's program fits into other initiatives nationwide,
or it might entail reexamining the usefulness or importance
of particular categories of material collected.
The Council is composed of the Chairs of the six Area Studies
Microform Projects, who serve as ex officio members.
Permanent guest representatives from affiliated organizations
may be invited. The Chair of the Council is a permanent appointment
from CRL's Board of Directors. The Director of International
Resources at CRL is the staff liaison to the Council.
The Council meets at least once a year, in connection with
the Collections & Services Advisory Panel to CRL. Meeting
summaries can be found on the Meetings
page of the Council.
