(NIU), Linda Joe (UBC), Fred Protopappas (LC), Lan Hiang
Char (Hawaii), Gene Smith (LC Jakarta), David Magier (Columbia),
Allen Riedy (Cornell), Charles Bryant (Yale), Fe Susan Go
(Michigan), Carol Mitchell (Wisconsin), Ray Lum (Harvard),
Avinash Maheshwary (Duke), Marie Sexton (National Library
of Australia), John Kleinen?
- Minutes of the 1993 meeting were approved.
- Marlys Rudeen gave the financial statement for the year.
She reported that the National Library of Indonesia has
taken over responsibility for methylene blue testing of
films produced there, and the test cost will be built
into the price.
- Old Business
- Indonesia Projects
A report from Alan Feinstein at the Jakarta Ford
Office was distributed.
- Philippine documentation Project
In response to the letter from Gaspar Sardalia
at UC Berkeley requesting assistance to finish the
filming the publications of the National Democratic
Front, Mitchell suggested that Wisconsin film the
materials in conjunction with their ongoing Philippine
filming project.
- New Projects
- Vietnam
Henchy reported on the problems of reduced funding.
She suggested that no money could easily be cut
from the set-up costs, and that an additional grant
proposal should be entertained for the purposes
of covering cataloging costs. She reported on a
conversation with Terry Loutz of the Luce Foundation
where she set out ideas for incorporating the cataloging
requirements of the project with an expansion of
the VUC project into retrospective conversion. Funds
could be sought to ensure that the transfer protocols
which would allow VUC input to be loaded to ABN
and subsequently to OCLC. Marie Sexton, from the
National Library
of Australia noted that some progress on this
front was promised. [The Chair has requested clarification
of this issue from Dr. Cathro, Dept. Director of
the ANL, but has received no reply]
Henchy was planning trip to Viet Nam in August
of 1994.
- Philippine newspapers at Duke
This project was approved by ballot and discussion
of project plan took place. Mitchell also volunteered
to coordinate shipping of materials to Duke's Debbie
Jakubs.
- Lande election results
There was still confusion over this project, since
Yale was no longer able to carry out the project.
Susan Go volunteered to find out a status report
from Lande. This project has also been approved
by ballot for funding. It was not decided who should
do the filming. [Susan Go reports that the filming
will be going ahead at Yale as part of the preservation
program there. Ms. Go will be coordinating additions
to this collection from Prof. Wurfel. University
of Washington also has a collection from Prof Grossholtz.]
Carol Mitchell introduced:
- New Business
- Cooperative newspaper preservation
- Discussion of Cornell filming project
Cornell
faces issues of storage for old newspapers and
will have to film materials or discard. The
question of whether UMI
will want to, or should be encouraged to, expand
the existing filming contract was discussed.
Alternatively, should Cornell try to get grant
money to assist in preservation filming activities,
thereby maintaining independence from the commercial
sector.
What would CRL's role be? There was some discussion
of whether CRL should give priority to less
prominent, sub-national titles, since these
are not likely to be found commercially viable
for vendors, or whether initial focus should
be on ensuring national-level coverage.
Could film with acquisitions money and would
hope to sell film. Or could cooperate with CRL,
sending copies to SEAM including print master.
- Newspapers and copyright
The issue of copyright has been raised in connection
with film of the New Straits Times. [More recent
reports indicate that this immediate problem
has been resolved]. Copyright generally remains
an issue for filming materials from Malaysia
and Singapore, but has not been raised as a
problem in connection with materials from Thailand.
- Thai newspapers at Michigan
Susan Go reported that these papers had been
transferred from Stanford to Berkeley, and from
there to Michigan. Now they are to be transferred
to Cornell? The nature of the newspapers was
not clear to me.
- Other business
- Visayan Daily Star
Dan Doeppers requested a late item to be appended
to the business of the meeting with a recommendation
that SEAM consider assisting in the filming of this
Bacolod paper. John Wiersma would supervise the
filming at the Ateneo, which would be paid for by
the Ateneo provided that at least one institution
would be willing to buy the product. [An estimate
of $2,000 was discussed with the Chair in June 1994,
but not firm estimate of cost has been received
from the Ateneo library.] As an adjunct to this
project, Al McCoy has also recommended the filming
of The Visayan Times. Preliminary information was
distributed at the meeting.
- Carol Mitchell raised the subject of materials on
film from the Taiwan Documentation Center - Academica
Sinica. 30 boxes of material.
- Gene Smith brought brochures describing the film
collection available from the Legal Documentation
Center of the Faculty of Law of the University of
Indonesia. [The Chair is recommending this collection
as a candidate for purchase by CRL. Prof. Dan Lev
is willing to write in support of the collection should
the membership wish to pursue this opportunity.]
