| Description
(subject, years covered, format, physical description,
etc.) |
This is a total
set of about 14 Nepali newspapers in long unbroken runs,
collected by the MPP and filmed by them under supervision
of LC consultants. MPP has created only master negatives.
This proposal is to acquire for SAMP the first 20
reels [highest priority items] of this set, and to
ship these original masters to the RMRL in Chennai,
India, where trained RMRL staff will use their film
duplicators to make use copies and duplicating masters
for SAMP (and for MPP) and send the original master
negs plus one set of positive copies back to MPP at
Kathmandu.
RMRL staff will also use their Wicks & Wilson
film scanner to scan the film to make digital copies
of these first 20 reels, and will place them on CDs
to be sent to Chicago for mounting on the web on DSAL.
(CD copies also go back to MPP). |
| Reasons
for Consideration (Importance of material, history of
collection, physical condition, etc.) |
The total
set comprises about 14 Nepali newspapers, assembled
at the MPP which is the world's largest and most unique
archive of Nepali language materials. These titles [see
attached list], according to Irene Joshi's union list
of South Asian newspapers, are not held anywhere else
in any significant runs, and are important for South
Asian historical and cultural research.
This proposal is for the cost of shipping these first
20 reels from Kathmandu to Chennai and back, shipping
copies to Chicago, for the cost of film stock and
operator's time for the film duplicators and scanners
in Chennai at the RMRL, and for the MPP fee for loaning
their negatives. (The cost of stock plus shipping
is much lower than similar service via commercial
source such as Preservation Resources Inc.) |

Scan operator at RMRL:
16,000 exposures @ Rs.5/exposure
