Middle East Microform Project (MEMP)

Executive Board Minutes

Thursday, November 16, 2006
The Red House restaurant,
Cambridge, MA
5:30 – 7:00 pm

Present: David Hirsch (UCLA) chair, Jonathan Rodgers (Michigan) sec/treas, Ali Houissa (MELA), William Kopycki (Penn), Peter Magierski (NYU), Meryle Gaston (UCSB), Michael Hopper (Harvard), John Eilts (Stanford), Judy Eckoff (CRL).

• Minutes distributed and approved.

• CRL Reports (Eckoff) CRL is considering a number of options for digitizing material from AMPs and requests feedback on digitization strategies. Comments included:
o What impact will digitization efforts have on CRL and MEMP dues? (it is assumed that dues will be increased)
o Will increased digital access to MEMP (and other) materials be fair to current MEMP members? (If existing collections are digitized and therefore freely available to everyone, what benefit will MEMP membership hold?)
o What standards will be used for storage of the digital material?
o What user interface will be used?

• Nominations for Executive Board—candidate list reviewed:
Brenda Bickett (Georgetown), Robin Dougherty (U Texas), Michael Hopper (Harvard), Hossein Kamaly (Columbia), William Kopycki (U Penn), Simon Samoeil (Yale).
Elections to be held at MEMP Business Meeting Nov. 17 (following day).

• Old and Continuing Business

o Irani Opposition Papers—Harvard will send to CRL in Dec.
o William Kopycki will coordinate translation of MEMP webpage into Arabic after January 1, 2007.
o MERJ pending proposal—Will digitized journals be freely available to all, regardless of whether MEMP approves this proposal?
o al-Mu’tamar pending proposal—need to confirm what LC is filming of this title.
o Waqa’I Iraqiyah proposal—law librarians are working on filming it.
o al-Quds—What dates does CRL currently have available for filming?
o Kamaly proposal—specific titles and dates need to be documented.

• Newspaper Survey (Hopper)—no recent developments

• Also discussed:
o New member recruitment strategies for MEMP.
o Attempt to raise MEMP dues from $500. to $750. Vote to be taken at MEMP Business Meeting on Nov. 17.
