Topics include the budget, commitments, and list of MEMP
items received, on order, recently received.
Items catalogued by those members who volunteered to
do so, including D. Hirsch, M. St. Germain, and others
still working on other titles
Arabic pamphlet collection (LC): index received, 3800
items, sorted geographically and by subject
General news about CRL: M. Bloss departed for Endeavor.

ICON Project (ICON Global Newspaper Preservation
Effort)
International Coalition on Newspapers 4 years ago set
up a working group with NEH funding for a database of
international newspapers. The titles are filmed and the
design of the database is underway.
A Registry of intentions to film at CRL is to be set
up
Application for additional NEH funds for next two years
has been submitted.
Titles: in the current project 12 titles from Bombay,
Shanghai, La Raison Buenos Aires?, 5 Turkish titles will
be in next round

LC Preservation Directorate staff hired in digitization
endeavor; this is indicative of LC's current direction
About 100 ME/Hebrew titles a year marked for preservation
LC has completed work on Arabic pamphlet collection and
the index has been delivered to MEMP
LC received Hezbola materials from Syria and Lebanon.
These are in urgent need of preservation.
LC web site of filmed materials will not appear in November
as stated in 6 Aug minutes [but see now Library of Congress Bibliographies,
Research Guides and Finding Aids. Still necessary
to call ME division to determine holdings
LC Photodup downsized; Preservation Resources in Bethlehem
PA is taking over in compensation these reduced activities,
but Arabic materials will continue to be done in-house,
a decision made after 11 Sep
9-15 month filming backlog has resulted from the downsizing
of LC Photodup
British Library Arabic Mss guides will be delivered to
LC in Arabic script
LC will purchase as part of its stated commitment all
such manuscript and archival materials
Kluge Foundation
Chair in Islamica; also that commitment from outside funds
will help fund the purchase of Arabic Mss materials
LC commitment to convert ALL card files into online e.g.
Ottoman

capacity

Simon Samoeil introduces the project at Yale for creating
an online Middle East in Microform. He
is identifying possible sources of funding. The goal
is to establish an online serial list for print and film
of all holdings in US and abroad, including so far Syria,
Tunisia, Germany. The project involves selecting the
titles for digitizing and setting up the mechanisms for
text delivery. Simon has a draft of the project and
expresses the hope that original partners (Penn, Wash, UM)
will be willing to continue and submit letters of support
(OSU has also committed) by 28 Nov (from original and new
partners).
MEMP Board election is uncontested: Abraham,
Rodgers, St. Germain are elected
MEMP White Paper discussion for general
membership
Point of discussion varied among:
- Columbia is cutting back on print subscription because
of online availability
- What to do about exclusive online archiving
- discussion of copyright intricacies
- Digitalization directions
- What should MEMP be doing that it does not now do new
directions
- strength of MEMP is the ease and quickness in deciding
acquiring flexibility
Reminder to members that they can propose project involving
purchases under $600 without board or membership approval,
or can submit more extensive project proposals to James
Simon or Michael Hopper or any member via the MELA-List
