Middle East Microform Project (MEMP)

Guides to Collections

This page will describe historical aspects of the MEMP collection as well as recently completed projects which have been officially reported to the MEMP membership at the annual business meeting. It will also archive those projects taken off active consideration. This page does not represent the complete holdings of MEMP, but is rather a representative description of some of the items in the collection. For more details, please consult the CRL Online Catalog.

Afghan News

MEMP has filmed near-complete holdings of Vol. I through Volume XI (1985-1995) of Afghan News (later AFGHANews), published in Peshawar, Pakistan, using combined holdings from Yale, CRL, and UC Berkeley.

Ahali Group newspapers

The Ahali group of newspapers represented the ideas, philosophy, and political activities of first, the Ahali group, and later the National Democratic Party of Iraq.  The political publications of the group commences in 1932 an continues its intermittent appearance, under varied names, until 1963.  The Chadirji Research Centre has produced a set of 27 microfilm reels and an index to the collection (1646 pages, CD-ROM).  It contains collections of al-Ahali, Sawt al-Ahali, al-Mabdaa, al-Bayan, Sada al-Ahali, al-Mauatin, and al-Akhaa al-Watani

Algerian Newspapers

MEMP worked with the Library of Congress to film holdings of Algerian newspapers. This is a multi-year committment. Some of the titles included in this project are:

Arab-American View

MEMP filmed this Arab-American monthly published in Orland Park, IL by Ray Hanania. Dates included are [Oct. 1999-Aug. 2002].

al-Balagh (San'a', Yemen)

MEMP has filmed this independent weekly from Yemen for the period 1990-2001.

Dunya (Tehran, Iran)

This opposition newspaper is held by Harvard University for the period of March 1960 - December 1989.

al-Masar

This bi-monthly newspaper from Ramallah covers Palestinian and Arab-Israeli issues. MEMP has filmed December 1999 - March 2001.

Namakdân

This Persian literary and cultural journal from Tehran, Iran was edited by 'Abd al-Husayn Ayâtî, one of the proponents of the "Pure Persian" movement in Iran. MEMP has filmed this journal held by the University of Pennsylvania for the period 1308/1929-1315/1936 (some issues lacking).

Nawbahar (Mashhad)

MEMP has filmed this early Persian newspaper, held in one bound volume by the University of Pennsylvania for the period 1922-1923.

al-Nur

This weekly newspaper from Damascus covering politics and social issues has been filmed by MEMP for the period 2001-2005 (no. 16-no. 220).

al-Ra'y al-akhar

MEMP filmed al-Ra'y al-akhar, a Sudanese-American periodical published in Texas for the period Sept. 20, 1994-Oct. 1997.

al-Samir

MEMP has filmed this newspaper from New York, which was once the largest Arabic daily publication in the United States. The newspaper contains news and articles concerning the Arabic community in America along with international news. All of the editorials were written by Abu Madi, one of the founders of the "Pen League".

Sunday Ghibli

MEMP and Cornell University have filmed Sunday Ghibli, an English-language newspaper from Tripoli, Lybia.  This film represents almost a complete run of the paper (published from 1945-1967).  MEMP holds 7 reels of film (1948, 1950-58, 1961-67).

Turkish Opposition Newspapers

MEMP filmed newspapers from Istanbul, Turkey and Bonn, Germany, covering Turkey's political climate from 1986-1997. Many issues are lacking and considered out of print.

Ufuq al-'Arabi

Issues 1-55 plus one special issue of this Bedford Park, IL, Arab-American newspaper has been filmed by MEMP.

Tabled Projects

Iran (Tehran, Iran)

UCLA possesses a rare volume of this newspaper (1921-1922) not held elsewhere in the United States.
Status: Drop from consideration - being issued in a facsimile edition.

al-Kuwayt al-yawm

The official gazette of the Kuwaiti government, this material is printed on poor quality paper and is deteriorating badly.  Ohio State University has proposed filming years 1954-1969 to supplement film by the Library of Congress.
Status:  Library of Congress has plans to film this title. Drop from consideration.
