Official Business:
- David Block assumed the chair and bid adios to Marlys
Rudeen, and welcomed James Simon, the new CRL Area Studies
liaison. (Everyone raised a glass of mojito to toast to
a successful LAMP meeting!)
- Two new institutional members: Indiana University
(Julie Nilson representative) and Rice University
(Milton Figg representative). This brings LAMP membership
to 43 ($35,000 total annual revenue).
- 1998 Minutes reviewed and corrections offered by Dan
Hazen, Terry Peet and Edmundo Flores. DB will revise and
post approved minutes on listserve.
- James Simon began his new CRL position in January 1999.
He reviewed the financials (attachment) and declared that
the state of LAMPs budget is good. LAMP has a hefty
surplus. The end of the Fiscal Year for LAMP is June.
JS revised the reporting format for LAMP "Commitments"
(attachment) and also distributed list of items "Received"
(attachment). The LAMP homepage has a new design, same
URL (attachment). DB will funnel any suggestions on the
homepage to JS.
- JS also distributed a supplement to the LAMP holding
list (attachment).
Continuing Projects:
- Memorias (Edmundo Flores). EF gave
a brief background on the Memorias microfilming project.
The original goal was to film Latin American ministries
annual reports from the mid-19th century to
the 20th century. Initially, 100 titles were
chosen; NEH gave $250,000; when this ran out LAMP stepped
in and contributed funds. No filming has been done this
FY. Four additional titles have been recommended to film
(attachment). All members are asked to check their library
catalogs for additional holdings by the end of the summer.
EF does not need additional funds from LAMP.
- Crítica (DB & JS). A long running
Argentine news serial. Filming was done in BA; however,
there have been some complications with sending film back
and forth. The company doing the filming for LAMP, Estudios
Tres, has now become Anagrafix. LAMP agreed to film through
1940; it has only been filmed through 1932; the money
originally allocated has been drawn down. Further filming
of this title is on hold until LAMP approves additional
resources. Peter Johnson commented that it is the first
modern Latin American newspaper and runs until 1952, although
after 1940, it diminishes in quality. Berkeley has some
on film; exact holdings to be confirmed.
- La Protesta (DB). IDC produced a microfilm
set of radical periodicals based on the collections of
the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.
A portion of La Protesta is included in this set. Dan
Hazen states that Biblioteca Nacional in BA has a full
run and would like to cooperate with LAMP to film the
entire run. Exactly what years does the IDC set include?
Eudora Loh will check with IDC and will also confirm UCLAs
holdings.
- Princeton Theological Serials (Peter
Johnson). 54 of the originally proposed 134 titles remain
to be filmed. (Attachment)
- Aramayo-Francke Archive (Dan Hazen).
No progress report.
- Variedades (Dora Loh). Filming is 50%
complete. Cornell is also filming a segment. What segment?
Can there be coordination of these efforts?
- Off the agenda item: Scott Van Jacob announced that
the CRL/LAMP Brazilian Government Serial Digitization
Project has begun indexing the reports using a thesaurus
of 200 terms. He anticipates that indexing of 1,600
of the 2,500 reports will be completed this year.
Proposals:
- ICON. (Dan Hazen and James Simon))
The final report is available on the CRL website. There
is a recommendation to form a permanent committee/taskforce
on international newspapers. Preservation is one concern;
also the dismal condition of bibliographic control of
holdings. A union list of international newspapers (in
cooperation with OCLC) is the major thrust of the grant
proposal to NEH (deadline July 1). The proposal focuses
on English, Chinese, East European/Slavic and Latin American
newspapers.
- Colección Puertorriqueña. No report.
- Major Latin American States and Meg-city documents
(Peter Johnson). By law, the Biblioteca Nacional in Venezuela
is responsible for collecting documents on Caracas. Perhaps
this as a beginning to capturing these types of documents?
Pursue a Ford funded project? LC is collecting some official
documents for cities, but it is spotty (G&E program
not always effective). PJ raises the question: How to
keep on top of collecting these documents?
- Preservación de la memoria histórica en el Cono
Aur. (Dan Hazen & Peter Johnson). The Ford
Foundation sponsored a taller in Chile on the preservation
of documents from various human rights organizations.
What can LAMP do to pick up on this initiative? PJ distributed
a list of three organizations in Chile (attachment). Many
of the archives consist of correspondence, ephemera, tape
recordings and videos and raise new issues of preservation
and access for LAMP, e.g., preservation of audio tapes,
confidential files with restricted access to LAMP members.
Ford approached Notre Dame about creating a depository
of Truth Commission reports. Should there be a coordinated
effort of collecting/preserving these types of materials?
New philosophical issues for LAMP to grapple with. Under
what conditions can we deal with this type of archive?
What would it entail to resolve the confidentiality issues?
Proposal: Will designate someone to approach PIDEE (Fundación
de Protección de la Infancia Dañada por los Estados de
Emergencia) and investigate the needs, and limitations
of the archive. Approved.
- Jornal do Brasil. (Adán Griego) Has
1938-1990 been filmed?
- Literatura de cordel at the Casa Rui Barbosa.
(Dan Hazen) 5,000 pieces of cordel literature fully cataloged
by the CRB. Is LAMP interested in acquiring? DH will post
on LAMP list more about this proposal.
- Microfilming projects in Argentina.
(Dan Hazen) About 5 to 10 years of the Standard (Buenos
Aires) has been filmed between LC, British Library and
LAMP. Another $3,000 is required to fill the gaps and
to buy from the British Library years not available in
US. LAMP voted to approve up to $3000 for this
project, though the cost for the BL holdings was as yet
unknown and needed to be priced out.
- Advantages & Disadvantages of filming with
LAMP. (Darlene Waller) Uconn has a large collection
of early Latin American newspapers donated to its lirbary
by the American Antiquarian Society (see UConn website
for more details on the collection). DW raises the question
for discussion about filming this collection (and others
like it) by partnering with commercial vendors or through
LAMP. Is it an issue of conscience, profit, greed, or
access? Institutions are faced with choices in preserving
their unique collections; to go the nonprofit or profit
route? Is the bottom line access?
- Archivo Histórico de Mendoza. Provincial newspapers.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary, Denise Hibay
