Correio Paulistano was the oldest daily newspaper of Sao Paulo, established in 1854, and one of the two most important titles in the region. The title began publication in an era of increasing industrialization and growth in São Paulo, and the viewpoints of the newspaper represented the São Paulo oligarchy. During the Old Republic era, Correio Paulistano became the political organ of the Partido Republicano Paulista (PRP), a prominent member of the coalition ruling Brazil. The political coup in 1930 caused the newspaper cease publication on October 30. The newspaper was reinstated in June 1934, though it was periodically subject to censorship from the ruling party.

The newspaper sheds light on the political, cultural, and economic perspectives of the country’s elite, as well as the daily life of the population of São Paulo.

LAMP supported the effort of the Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil to film its later holdings (early years already exist on microfilm, though archival quality may vary).
