PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IDEAL FOR STUDENTS

Would you enjoy doing work that has a scholarly benefit? Do you welcome the chance to work with a wide range of unique material from around the globe? If so, you may wish to explore the part-time Library Assistant positions at the Center for Research Libraries (CRL).

In order to perform the essential functions of the position, you must:

  • Have the capacity to consistently perform detailed and repetitive clerical work, which includes accurate alpha and numeric filing
  • Possess an understanding of the research and classroom use of primary- and secondary-source materials
  • Be able to maintain a regular work schedule of  8 to 18 hours per week within CRL’s normal hours of operation: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Library experience is a preferred qualification for all Part-Time Library Assistant opportunities posted. You must also be authorized to legally accept work in the U.S. not limited to “on campus” employment. The work assignments available, along with additional requirements and qualifications preferred, are described below:

Access Services: Help this customer interactive department sustain a track record of a 24-hour turnaround on 90 percent of requests. Assist with processing member requests by bar-coding and creating item records for materials that are about to be shipped and materials that have been returned both in paper and digital form.

Additional requirements and preferred qualifications: Must be willing and able to routinely lift up to 20 pounds and push a cart with up to 100 lbs. of library material on it. Fundamental keyboarding knowledge and data-entry skills as well as sufficient computer literacy to use the basic functions of interlibrary loan systems and perform limited scanning of material are requirements. Prior experience scanning documents or bar-coding is preferred. Prior production environment experience a plus.

Digital Production: Position is responsible for operating state-of-the-art scanning equipment as well as executing the tasks and implementing the quality assurance measures necessary to produce high-quality scans of printed and microfilmed material for digital transmission.

Additional requirements and preferred qualifications: Must be willing and able to routinely lift material weighing five to ten pounds and can be required to push a book cart. Must be able to exercise close vision for an extended period of time and have the ability to adjust visual focus, repeatedly. Prior experience scanning documents is preferred. Prior production environment experience a plus.

Stack Management: Stack management provides physical access to all of CRL’s collections. Stack Management Assistants page all materials requested on Interlibrary Loan and subsequently reshelve all returned material. They shelve all new additions to the collections and maintain shelf order through shelf reading and error correction. These assistants also occasionally work on special projects, including work within a special collection including shelving, establishment of or maintenance of shelf order, and enclosure of fragile materials.  

Additional requirements and preferred qualifications:  Must be able to maintain a regular three-to-four day workweek and work between 10 and 18 hours per week. Must be willing and able to routinely lift up to 20 pounds and push a cart with up to 100 lbs. of library material on it.

Technical Services: Position is responsible for bar-coding and inputting or deleting location and holdings information into the online catalog.

Additional requirements and preferred qualifications: Must be willing and able to routinely lift material weighing five to ten pounds and can be required to push a book cart. Must possess computer keyboarding skills. Ability to work with non-Western languages preferred. Prior bar coding experience is a plus.  

General Information:

The Center for Research Libraries is open year-round, so work is available through summer, school breaks, and holidays. A variety of schedules are available within our operating hours of Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The CRL is conveniently located adjacent to the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park Campus.

Compensation:

The current pay rate is $10.00 per hour.
