PART-TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT OPPORTUNITIES

The following part-time Library Assistant positions offer various opportunities to support CRL’s mission of providing researchers, libraries and institutions unique and essential materials from around the globe in print and digital format.


AMPS Program

Assist with the preparation, organization and conservation and description of library materials (newspapers, journals etc.) for the Area Studies Material Program (AMPS)  Responsibilities include receiving and unpacking materials and quality control of returned materials which can require the ability to lift up to 50 pound boxes and push a library cart with 100 pounds of material.  Position also requires the ability to work with material in a variety of foreign languages, including non-western languages as well as basic data entry and internet search skills.

 

Stack Management

This function provides access to all of CRL’s print collection.  Prior experience working in a team is preferred. Positions are responsible for retrieving and returning material from and to the stacks which does require the ability to routinely lift up to 20 lbs and pushing a cart with 100 lbs of library material upon it.  Stack Management Assistants may also be assigned to projects involving work with special collections and/or fragile material.

 

Access Services

Help this customer interactive department to sustain a track record of 24 hour turn-around on more than 90% of requests.  Assist with processing member requests by bar coding and creating item records for materials that are about to be shipped.  In addition to being able to lift up to 20 lbs, push a cart with 100 lbs of library material, organize and file, this position requires basic data entry skills and functionality in Word.

 

Technical Services

Position is responsible for bar-coding and inputting or deleting location and holdings information into the on-line catalog. Position requires basic data entry, word processing and internet search skills.  Ability to work with non-Western languages preferred.  Position requires consistent lifting of material weighing 5-10 pounds and Technical Services Assistants may be required to push a cart with up to 100 pounds of library material on it.

 

Requirements for all the opportunities described:

  • Ability to assimilate instructions and execute work within established processes, according to instructions
  • Attention to detail and capacity to consistently perform detailed and/or repetitive work accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to collect and assemble information in an orderly efficient manner
  • Must be able to maintain a regular work schedule of between 8 and 18 hours per week within CRL’s hours of business, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Must be authorized to legally accept work in the U. S., not limited to “on campus” employment.

 

Prior library experience and an understanding of the research and classroom uses of primary and secondary source material are the preferred qualifications for all Part-Time Library Assistant positions. Experience researching and comparing scholarly material is a plus. 

 

General Information:

CRL is open year-around, so work is available through the summer, school breaks and holidays.  A variety of schedules are available with in our operating hours of Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  CRL is conveniently located adjacent to the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park Campus.

 

Compensation:

The current pay rate is $10.00 per hour
